Actor Laurence Fishburne spoke about the possibility of reprising his role in The Matrix saga.
Fishburne originally portrayed Morpheus in the Wachowskis’ initial trilogy (1999, 2003). He said that whether he appears in a fifth installment will come down to the strength of the screenplay.
“It depends on whether the script is genuinely worthwhile. If it’s excellent, then it makes sense. At the moment I’m not convinced it does,” Fishburne said at New York Comic Con.
In the fourth franchise entry, The Matrix Resurrections (2021), Morpheus was played by Yahya Abdul-Mateen II. Warner Bros. announced The Matrix 5 in spring 2024, with Drew Goddard (The Cabin in the Woods) attached to direct. Whether Keanu Reeves (Neo) and Carrie-Anne Moss (Trinity) will return has not been confirmed. No release date has been revealed.
