In a major development for the gaming landscape, Baldur’s Gate 3 is officially being adapted into a live-action HBO series. The project is being led by Craig Mazin, the acclaimed showrunner behind The Last of Us and Chernobyl. However, a significant detail has surfaced that may worry fans: the original developers and writers at Larian Studios are not involved in the production, despite the series being framed as a narrative continuation of the game.
Public sentiment regarding the news is notably divided. Michael Douse, Larian’s Director of Publishing, appeared to voice his frustration over the situation. In a recent post on X, Douse remarked: “I’ve spent nearly a decade working alongside the creators of Baldur’s Gate 3, and they are truly the finest storytellers in the industry. My only hope is that they receive the recognition they deserve and that these characters are handled with the same care seen in the game.” Notably, his social media bio was updated to read: “the Chernobyl show was pretty good,” a likely tongue-in-cheek nod to Mazin’s past work.
After industry veteran Geoff Keighley confirmed that no one from the Larian team would be participating in the show’s development, Douse added pointedly: “Except for the fact that we were the ones who made the brand popular enough to actually be called Baldur’s Gate 3.”
Larian CEO Swen Vincke took a more diplomatic stance, mentioning that Mazin did reach out for a preliminary conversation. Nevertheless, many fans remain apprehensive. Some believe a simple outreach doesn't guarantee Larian will have any meaningful influence over the final product. Others are still reeling from the divisive creative choices made in the second season of The Last of Us, which departed significantly from the source material—an outcome that occurred even while game creator Neil Druckmann was still attached to the project.

With Larian’s original creative architects seemingly sidelined, there is a growing concern that an HBO-led continuation of the Baldur’s Gate 3 saga may struggle to capture the magic that made the game a masterpiece.
