New Resident Evil Movie Rated R for Strong Bloody Violence

The Motion Picture Association has assigned the upcoming Resident Evil film an R rating for “strong bloody violence, gore, and language throughout,” indicating the new adaptation may push the franchise into even more brutal territory.

An R rating is familiar territory for the Resident Evil cinematic franchise, as every prior feature film in the series earned the same mature classification. However, the specific descriptor “strong bloody violence” marks a shift for the series, which previously received ratings based on “horror violence” or general “strong violence.”

The new film delivers a standalone story set in the Resident Evil universe. The plot follows Brian, who receives an assignment to transport a donor organ container to a hospital in Raccoon City before the routine drive spirals into a fight for survival. The entire narrative unfolds across a single night as Brian navigates increasingly dangerous areas, scavenges weapons, and battles grotesque mutant threats.

The cast includes Zach Cherry, Kali Reis, and Paul Walter Hauser. The new Resident Evil movie is scheduled to premiere in standard theaters and IMAX on September 18, 2026.
