Dan Stevens to Play Alex Murphy in Amazon’s RoboCop

The upcoming television reboot of RoboCop has found its lead in Dan Stevens, with the writers of Paul Verhoeven’s original film returning to help guide the project.

According to Deadline, Amazon MGM Studios has cast the Legion and Downton Abbey star to portray officer Alex Murphy and his cybernetic alter ego.

The first season will consist of eight episodes. The story follows the aftermath of a major tech conglomerate convincing municipal authorities to deploy an advanced robotic officer driven by the consciousness of the slain Murphy.

Peter Ocko, known for Lodge 49, Pushing Daisies, and The Office, will serve as showrunner, writer, and executive producer. Atomic Monster and Blumhouse will produce the series, with James Wan, Michael Clear, and Rob Hackett on board. Ed Neumeier and Michael Miner, who wrote the 1987 feature film, have also joined the production as executive producers.

Wan stated that the new show will retain the core themes of the 1987 classic while adapting them to a modern technological landscape:

“What Paul Verhoeven created in 1987 was decades ahead of its time. The questions about technology, identity, and who corporations really serve have only become more relevant. We want to preserve everything that made the original iconic, emphasize its significance for today’s tech world, and create something completely new at the same time.”
