Kingdom Hearts IV: 2027 Release Window, ‘Coco’ World, and Anime Series Announced
Kingdom Hearts IV Set for Late 2027 Release: Features Pixar’s Coco and Newly Announced Anime Series
Disney’s biennial D23 fan expo served as the stage for several major entertainment unveils, offering fans their most comprehensive look yet at Kingdom Hearts IV. Square Enix confirmed that the highly anticipated action-RPG, originally revealed in 2022, is scheduled to arrive in late 2027. Headlining the showcase was the reveal of the game’s first featured Disney realm: the vibrant universe of Pixar’s Academy Award-winning film, Coco.
A brand-new gameplay trailer follows protagonist Sora as he navigates the Land of the Dead, teaming up with Miguel and the charismatic Héctor. Staying true to the franchise’s legacy, the narrative allows players to immerse themselves in a reimagined version of the 2017 animated classic. Footage showcased Sora wielding an ornate, Día de los Muertos-themed Keyblade while vanquishing Heartless foes across spectral neon landscapes.
Beyond the mystical setting of the Land of the Dead, the trailer provided fresh glimpses of Quadratum, the sprawling modern metropolis serving as the game’s core backdrop, alongside brief introductions to two enigmatic new characters. Additional gameplay segments revealed King Mickey, Donald Duck, and Goofy actively pursuing clues to track down Sora’s whereabouts.
Original Anime Series in Development
Complementing the video game reveals, Square Enix and Disney officially greenlit an animated adaptation under the working title Kingdom Hearts. Headed to both Disney+ and Disney Channel, the anime project is being developed in close collaboration with franchise director Tetsuya Nomura and key creative members from the gaming team.
Kingdom Hearts IV is slated for release in late 2027 across PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, Nintendo Switch 2, and PC platforms.
