Karlach from Baldur’s Gate 3 Ultimately Gets a Good Ending — But the Bad Ending Also Has Its Fans

The official lorebook sheds light on Karlach’s situation following the events of Larian Studios’ game.

The creators of Baldur’s Gate 3 delivered a wealth of content, yet Karlach lacked a clearly satisfying ending. That omission has recently been addressed.

Fans have turned their attention to the official Dungeons & Dragons lorebook, Book of Hungers. It reveals what becomes of Karlach going forward.

Baldur’s Gate 3 is set in the year 1492. According to the lorebook, by 1501 Karlach is still alive, has not transformed into an illithid, and has resurfaced in Faerûn.

From this, supporters inferred that during her time in Avernus the heroine managed to resolve the issue with her “engine” (her mechanical heart).

Notably, the so-called “bad ending” was widely criticized by many players. Samantha Béart (who portrays Karlach) has previously discussed fans’ reactions.

It turned out that some people with PTSD and those living with chronic, incurable illnesses appreciated that the Baldur’s Gate 3 writers did not grant the character a convenient, magical escape from her predicament.
