Justin Trudeau’s patriotism is well-documented, but his devotion to his “California Gurl” appears to be taking precedence this week. After choosing to forgo Canada’s World Cup opening festivities to attend the United States vs. Paraguay match alongside Katy Perry, the former Canadian prime minister took to social media to clarify his priorities.
In a post shared on Saturday (June 13) via X, Trudeau addressed his absence from Canada’s clash against Bosnia and Herzegovina. Resharing a New York Times report that highlighted his conspicuous lack of attendance, he offered a lighthearted defense: “Sometimes, supportive boyfriend duties take precedence,” he quipped, referencing his presence at the opening ceremony where Perry headlined ahead of the Team USA kickoff.
“That said, everyone knows who I’m backing to take home the Cup,” he added, punctuating the sentiment with a Canadian flag emoji.
Perry was one of several global superstars to grace the stage during the Inglewood, California, opening ceremony on Friday (June 12). The pop icon delivered a live rendition of “Wonder,” a track from her 143 album, performing alongside 10-year-old Norwegian vocalist Tius Luka. The star-studded ceremony also featured sets from LISA, Anitta, Tyla, Rema, Future, and Dan + Shay.
Meanwhile, in Canada, a roster of national talent—including Alanis Morissette, Alessia Cara, Elyanna, Jessie Reyez, and Michael Bublé—provided the entertainment for Team Canada’s opening match.
Trudeau and the “Firework” singer have been a couple since last summer. Their public profile recently soared during the premiere of her Lifetimes Tour concert film at the Tribeca Festival, where a candid Perry identified Trudeau as “the love of my life” during a post-screening Q&A.
“I tend to fly high,” Perry remarked regarding their relationship. “I often need a grounding force. Having that anchor has truly made me feel complete.”
