“You can usually spot it right away, can’t you?” Slayyyter asks Bella Kay, pulling her hands back from her crossed knees as an amused smile spreads across her face. “I can instantly recognize when something has been generated by AI.”
Bella covers her mouth, laughing softly before explaining that the dead giveaway for her is an unnatural song structure. “You’ll suddenly find yourself listening to five different choruses!” she notes, her bright orange curls bouncing with every laugh.
“If you pay close attention, the lyrics are always completely nonsensical,” Slayyyter adds. Adopted in a playfully dramatic tone, she sings: “ ‘And we fall-l-l-l down/And we’re in love/And we fall-l-l-l again.’ You just sit there thinking, ‘Wait, what does that even mean?’”
Seated just to their left, Trueno breaks into a warm chuckle at Slayyyter’s improvised satire. Rubbing his hands together, he offers a broader perspective on the craft: “If you genuinely aspire to be an artist, you have to embrace a bit of healthy eccentricity,” he remarks, tapping his temples with his index fingers. “Algorithms simply don’t possess that kind of mindset.”
In today’s fast-paced musical landscape, emerging talents face the dual challenge of distinguishing themselves among countless human peers while also rising above synthetic competition. Although Bella, Trueno, and Slayyyter—who convened in Los Angeles early this July during a pivotal year for each of their careers—may seem distinct on the surface, they share a singular, uncompromising dedication: championing their own authentic voices above all else.
