Why JISOO Felt Driven to Release a Solo Album Following BLACKPINK’s Success
With Jisoo’s appearance on the Thursday, July 30, episode of Hot Ones, every member of Blackpink has officially conquered the notoriously fiery wings of death challenge. During her fiery sit-down with host Sean Evans, the multi-talented star discussed her upcoming solo album, her favorite newly acquired English idioms, and the surprisingly practical reason she indulges in spicy cuisine right before stepping on stage.
While her bandmates Jennie, Rosé, and Lisa visibly struggled through the blazing gauntlet on their respective episodes, Sean Evans hinted that Jisoo might possess the highest spice tolerance of the entire quartet. In fact, during her own 2025 appearance on the series, Jennie specifically urged producers to put Jisoo’s famed resilience to the test.
The South Korean singer and actress maintained remarkable composure as the Scoville ratings escalated, seamlessly pivoting between handling the scorching wings and answering Evans’ probing questions. Discussing her highly anticipated debut full-length solo album, Jisoo shared, “I made a concerted effort to showcase a diverse spectrum of my artistry. Whether incorporating musical directions I am personally drawn to or blending various genres I love listening to, the goal was to infuse the album with vibrant character.”
Reflecting on her transition from group activities to forging her own solo path, she added, “Moving from a collective group dynamic to curating my own solo mini-album last year made me realize the importance of truly defining my artistic identity through this journey. I’ve embarked on an even more ambitious chapter this time, and I am eager to pour my heart into overcoming its challenges alongside everyone.”
Even as the heat intensified past the midpoint of the interview, the Boyfriend on Demand star lightened the mood by revealing the latest English phrase taught to her by her more fluent bandmates. Having previously mastered expressions like “It’s a pity,” Jisoo proudly noted, “They recently taught me another one just like it: ‘Piece of cake!'”
She laughingly confessed that she loves dropping the phrase unexpectedly to startle people with her linguistic flair. “When they ask how I even know that expression, I just smile and tell them I simply do,” she remarked with a mischievous grin.
Though she ultimately reached her threshold near the finish line—resorting to sips of milk, cooling spoonfuls of ice cream, and giving her burning tongue some air—Evans’ prediction proved spot-on. As it turns out, Jisoo is far from a novice when it comes to fiery flavors.
“I actually make a point of eating spicy food,” she revealed when discussing her pre-show rituals. “Consuming something spicy relaxes my vocal cords, which genuinely helps me sing better. Plus, working up a good sweat is a fantastic way to release physical tension and decompress.”
Following a rigorous comeback tour that spanned from July of last year through January, Blackpink dropped their chart-climbing EP Deadline in February, securing a stellar No. 8 debut on the Billboard 200. Currently, Jisoo is putting the finishing touches on her forthcoming debut solo album, which follows her standout February 2025 EP, AMORTAGE.
