Jalen Brunson has come to the defense of New York Knicks analyst Monica McNutt following the intense online scrutiny she faced regarding her comments about Taylor Swift.
Fresh off the Knicks’ championship-clinching victory in Game 5 this past Saturday (June 13), the Finals MVP used his postgame spotlight to address the tension that brewed after McNutt questioned the pop icon’s loyalty to the team during the Game 4 broadcast.
Amid the jubilant postgame celebrations, Brunson took a moment to offer McNutt his public support while playfully reaching out to the singer’s massive fanbase.
“I’d like to say a quick word to the Swifties,” the basketball star remarked as McNutt looked on with a smile. “She’s actually a real one. Cut her some slack—it’s all good, I promise.”
The controversy ignited earlier in the week when Swift attended Game 4 at Madison Square Garden. While seated courtside alongside the HAIM sisters and actress Mariska Hargitay, McNutt’s broadcast partner attempted to capture a photo of the superstar. Unimpressed by the spectacle, McNutt openly questioned Swift’s fandom, quipping, “She’s not a Knicks fan. Get out of here, girl.” The candid moment quickly spiraled on social media, drawing the ire of loyal Swifties.
McNutt addressed the fallout the following morning, clarifying her stance while acknowledging a gap in her research. “I appreciate the passion of the Swifties. I said what I said, but apparently, I was misinformed,” the analyst admitted. “I wasn’t aware she owned an Amar’e Stoudemire jersey. I’ve been embedded with this organization for five years, and I’m used to seeing the usual suspects like Spike Lee or Fat Joe. I hadn’t spotted her at games previously, and she didn’t have any Knicks gear on, so I didn’t realize her history. Shout out to T-Swift—we can all unite under the orange and blue.”
Before tip-off on Saturday, McNutt returned to social media to dismiss the ordeal as a “big fat nothingburger,” emphasizing that with a championship title on the line, there were far more important matters to focus on.
