Is the New Tomb Raider at Risk? Crystal Dynamics Lays Off Dozens

Crystal Dynamics has confirmed another round of staff reductions — 30 employees have been let go. Company leadership described the move as a “difficult but necessary restructuring.”

A post on LinkedIn clarified that the layoffs affected “various departments and projects.” This marks the studio’s third reduction in 2025: seventeen people departed in March, and another wave followed in August after Microsoft canceled the reboot of Perfect Dark, which Crystal Dynamics had been developing alongside The Initiative.

The studio attributed the decision to shifts in the market and the need to “streamline work” on the next Tomb Raider. It emphasized that the franchise’s primary project remains a priority and continues to progress.

It’s worth remembering the new entry was announced in 2022; since then only a single piece of concept art — released in early 2024 — has been shown. The lack of updates, combined with this latest round of cuts, has amplified fans’ concerns.

Crystal Dynamics says it appreciates the community’s support and “will soon share impressive results from the team’s efforts.”
