Insomniac Reveals Game That Inspired Marvel’s Wolverine
Insomniac Games studied 2009’s X-Men Origins: Wolverine during the development of Marvel’s Wolverine, aiming to solve similar design challenges around Logan’s powers.
Marvel’s Wolverine director Mike Daly revealed in an interview that the team analyzed the 2009 movie tie-in to understand how another developer approached core combat problems rather than to copy specific mechanics.
According to Daly, both development teams faced the same fundamental challenge: translating Wolverine’s signature abilities into a video game format so combat feels spectacular, satisfying, and faithful to the original comic books.
X-Men Origins: Wolverine remains well regarded among fans for its brutal combat, dynamic regeneration visuals, and fast-paced action. Early impressions suggest Insomniac has captured the character’s core traits as well. The upcoming title will follow a more linear, combat-focused structure without the open-world framework of Marvel’s Spider-Man.
Marvel’s Wolverine is scheduled to release on September 15, 2026, exclusively on PlayStation 5.
