Insomniac Drops Playable Companions in Marvel’s Wolverine
Logan will be the only controllable character in Marvel’s Wolverine, with Jean Grey appearing strictly in a combat support role.
Senior Project Director Jess Reyner-Reid and Technical Director Mike Fitzgerald confirmed that the title will not feature multiple playable heroes:
Wolverine is our only playable character.
The sequence shown in the latest story trailer does not hand control to Jean Grey. Instead, she assists Logan during battles and participates in cooperative takedowns.

Fitzgerald explained the development team’s approach:
There is definitely a sense of a team in that respect. But we really focused on Wolverine as the playable character and wanted to make sure we got that right.
The single-character approach has sparked debate among fans. On Reddit, one user pushed back against comparisons to non-superpowered companions:
Comparing the playability of Mary Jane and Jean Grey is crazy.
Another commenter pointed out that existing games have already demonstrated how telekinetic combat can work, likening Jean Grey to Jesse Faden from Control without firearms:
The template is already there.
Designing a separate moveset and balance system for Jean Grey would have added substantial production time. A playable Jean could also have created expectations for dedicated missions featuring other prominent mutants such as Mystique and Sabretooth.
Marvel’s Wolverine is scheduled to release on September 15 for PlayStation 5.
