The Legend of Vox Machina has never hesitated to keep its audience on their toes, and the fourth season is a testament to that unpredictability. From Grog’s musical interludes and the sudden absence of the charming bard Scanlan Shorthalt (voiced by Sam Riegel) to an underwater clash featuring Keyleth, the series remains as chaotic as ever. In episode 5, appropriately titled “De Rolo’s Eleven,” the cast delivers a thrilling, high-stakes caper.
Beyond the obvious nod to Steven Soderbergh’s iconic 2001 heist flick Ocean’s Eleven, this episode reunites the core group for a seemingly impossible mission: infiltrating the heavily fortified Cobalt Soul archives in Rexentruum. Those familiar with The Mighty Nein will recognize the Cobalt Soul as the bastion of the monk Beauregard Lionett, which serves as a grim warning: breaching these halls is a monumental task, even for heroes of this caliber.
This episode perfectly balances the signature comedic flair of Critical Role with the expansive lore of Exandria. Yet, the true standout is Taliesin Jaffe’s portrayal of the gunslinging inventor, Percival de Rolo.
A year removed from their triumph over the Chroma Conclave’s draconic threats, Percy finds himself stepping into a command role, orchestrating the group’s infiltration. It’s a moment that places him center stage and, as Jaffe notes, pushes his strategic genius to the brink.
“Percy finally gets to showcase the full extent of his intellect,” Jaffe explains in a recent interview. “It’s fascinating to see what happens when he takes the reins of an entire operation and forces everyone to follow his specific vision for once.”
Whether this daring plan actually succeeds remains to be seen, but seeing Percy take charge signifies a massive evolution for the character from where he first began.
During the series’ debut season, Percy was defined by his all-consuming vendetta against the Briarwoods and his dangerous pact with the entity known as Orthax. His singular focus on retribution often blinded him to the bigger picture, rendering his leadership style erratic and unreliable.
Since those dark days, the gunslinger has undergone a profound transformation. Having returned from the brink of death—thanks to the efforts of Vax’ildan—and finding genuine happiness with Vex’ahlia, the formerly aloof loner has blossomed into a steady, reliable leader. However, as any seasoned fan of the heist genre knows, even the most meticulous plans are prone to unraveling when variables come into play.
Fans can dive into the latest action now, as the first six episodes of The Legend of Vox Machina season 4 are currently streaming on Prime Video.
