Mahershala Ali States He Has ‘Moved On’ from Marvel’s Blade

Mahershala Ali is firmly putting to rest any lingering hopes that his long-gestating Marvel Cinematic Universe project will ever materialize. While promoting his upcoming feature Your Mother Your Mother Your Mother, the acclaimed actor addressed the fate of Blade, making it clear that the chapter is definitively closed.

During the promotional run for Spider-Man: Brand New Day, Marvel Studios chief Kevin Feige publicly characterized the persistent hurdles in getting Blade off the ground as a “failure.” Prompted by these remarks during an interview with GQ, Ali was asked whether the supernatural thriller was making any headway. “Not with me,” Ali asserted unequivocally. Placing the responsibility squarely on the studio, he added, “[Marvel] had me under contract, they have billions of dollars. If they wanted to do the movie, we would’ve done the movie. So we’re not doing the movie.”

While audiences continue to search for clarity regarding the stalled vampire hunter reboot, there is a tangible link between the abandoned MCU venture and Your Mother Your Mother Your Mother. The film is helmed by Bassim Tariq, the original director brought on by Marvel in 2021 to steer Blade. Tariq ultimately departed the production a year later due to endless scheduling setbacks, later being succeeded by Yann Demange, who also exited in 2024.

Your Mother Your Mother Your Mother stars Ali as a deeply devout hitman who embarks on a perilous journey to shield his children from surrounding threats. Although it isn’t the officially licensed Marvel adaptation fans anticipated, the film emerged directly out of that collaborative fallout—carrying thematic echoes in its overarching premise. Reflecting on his choice, Ali noted that it ultimately boiled down to committing to either Your Mother Your Mother Your Mother or remaining tied to Blade, stating, “And I’ll take this.” He further observed that the upcoming project “feels very much in alignment with the type of work I want to be known for.” Having firmly turned the page on the endless inquiries about the comic book movie, Ali suggested that anyone still seeking explanations should take the matter up with Marvel.
