Despite production wrapping back in 2025, Amazon appears to be in no rush to bring the film to screens.

Amazon MGM has established a tentative release window for the live-action “Voltron” cinematic adaptation. According to reports from The Wrap, the studio is targeting a 2027 debut, although a specific premiere date has yet to be finalized.

The project lingered in development for several years, but the primary filming phase is now complete. Principal photography commenced in late 2024 across locations in Australia and concluded by mid-2025. Currently, the film is undergoing extensive post-production.

“Voltron” serves as a live-action reimagining of the classic 1980s series “Voltron: Defender of the Universe.” The project is helmed by director Rawson Marshall Thurber, best known for his work on “Red Notice.”

While the filmmakers are keeping specific plot points under wraps, earlier reports suggested the narrative is sparked by a personal tragedy. Following his mother’s passing, a young man from Earth discovers her secret legacy as one of the legendary Voltron pilots who once protected the galaxy from the tyrant Zarkon. When the ancient antagonist breaks free once more, the youth must embrace his heritage and rise as the new guardian of peace.

The ensemble cast features Daniel Quinn-Toye, Rita Ora, Alba Baptista, Samson Kayo, Laura Gordon, Tim Griffin, and Nathan Jones. Henry Cavill is set to portray the King of Altea—father of the fallen pilot and the original architect of the Voltron Lions—while Sterling K. Brown will embody the film’s primary villain.
