HBO’s “Lanterns” Will Turn the Green Lanterns into a “True Detective”-Style Show
Early reports from attendees of a closed presentation hint at a series that channels the spirit of a western and the tone of the first season of True Detective.
HBO Max has released the first teaser for the series “Lanterns,” part of James Gunn’s new DC film universe. The clip was screened behind closed doors at a presentation in São Paulo, so current accounts rely on eyewitness descriptions.
According to those who saw it, the teaser conveys a modern-western atmosphere: the story is set in rural America and the visuals favor a brown-and-gold palette. In the footage, Hal Jordan (Kyle Chandler) and John Stewart (Aaron Pierre) argue over who is better at saving people, and only a brief shot of Jordan in flight serves as a reminder that this is, at its core, a superhero tale.
The plot of “Lanterns” is described as “a grounded thriller about two intergalactic cops investigating a mysterious murder in the heart of the United States.” The detective thread gradually escalates into a much larger threat connected to the mythology of the Lantern Corps and the overarching DCU storyline.
James Gunn has previously likened the series to True Detective, and this new leak of descriptions appears to confirm that comparison.
No dates have been announced yet for the premiere or for when the teaser will be made available to the wider public.
