HBO’s Game of Thrones Prequel Finally Has a Premiere Date

The wait is nearly over: HBO confirmed on Monday that House of the Dragon returns for its highly anticipated third season on June 21. A dramatic new trailer accompanies the announcement, teasing the monumental shifts in power and brutal conflicts that have been brewing since the conclusion of season 2. Fans can finally brace themselves for the legendary Dance of the Dragons and the devastating Battle of the Gullet.

“You now command a power no man has ever wielded,” Daemon Targaryen (Matt Smith) asserts in the latest footage, framing the stakes for his partner. “Rhaenyra, you shall forge an unassailable empire, and our children will hold dominion over it for eternity.”

However, the path ahead is anything but certain. Following his bold betrayal of King Aegon Targaryen (Tom Glynn-Carney) in the House of the Dragon season 2 finale, the volatile Aemond Targaryen (Ewan Mitchell) has seized the Iron Throne. His mother, Alicent Hightower (Olivia Cooke), appears to have experienced a shift in perspective; finally recognizing her son’s true nature, she seems poised to assist Rhaenyra (Emma D’Arcy) and her faction of dragon riders in infiltrating the Red Keep to reclaim the crown.

Season 3 of House of the Dragon officially premieres Sunday, June 21, at 9 p.m. ET/PT on HBO and will be available to stream via HBO Max. The eight-episode arc will roll out weekly, culminating in the season finale on August 9.

This season marks the second journey into George R.R. Martin’s Westeros this year, following the six-episode run of A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms. The series is currently planned to conclude with a fourth season, expected in 2028.
