HBO Reveals Hal Jordan Cliffhanger in DC Series Lanterns

HBO’s Lanterns shifts between multiple points in time, recalling neo-noir series such as True Detective and Watchmen. The central narrative unfolds in 2016, but the premiere begins in 1996 with a newly minted Hal Jordan (Kyle Chandler) and a young John Stewart (Aaron Pierre). Hal became fearless enough to wield the Green Lantern ring after losing his father at a young age, while John was conditioned by his parents toward total fearlessness to prepare him for the same mantle.

The premiere concludes with an explosive sequence before an epilogue leaps ahead to a cliffhanger set in 2026.

Lanterns episode 1 ending explained

By 2016, Hal has spent roughly two months training John as a backup Green Lantern. Their investigation brings them to Rushville, Nebraska, following a mass shooting at a local football stadium. Hal suspects alien involvement based on an instinct honed over years of extraterrestrial encounters. Alongside Sheriff Kerry (Kelly Macdonald), the partners apprehend a suspect who appears human. Hal interrogates him and tricks the extraterrestrial into revealing his identity.

The alien declares his goals are “war” and “vengeance” while refusing to share specifics about his assignment. Instead, he activates a “biometric neutron device” integrated into his skeleton. Hal reacts immediately, trapping the blast inside an energy bubble generated by his Green Lantern ring.

The story then shifts to a snowy evening in 2026. An older, goateed John drives past the remains of a building and arrives at the Rushville stadium to meet Sheriff Kerry. In the stands where John and Hal sat ten years earlier, they find Hal Jordan dead in the snow with a bullet wound in his forehead. John checks Hal’s right hand and discovers the power ring is missing. “Knievel” by Scud Mountain Boys plays over the closing credits.

Is Hal Jordan really dead in Lanterns?

Because the story originates in comic books and involves shapeshifting aliens, some viewers have theorized that the body could be a construct or an imposter. The creative team, however, frames the death as a genuine plot foundation rather than an illusion.

Co-creators Chris Mundy, Damon Lindelof, and Tom King shaped the central mystery around this premise. Lindelof told Variety about the core pitch: “One of the very first things that was part of the premise was that this is a murder mystery with Green Lantern solving it.” That premise led the writers to ask, “What if it was one of them?”

Lindelof and King initially hesitated over killing a major DC superhero. “We can’t do that. Everyone’s going to hate us. It feels gimmicky,” Lindelof recalled in a conversation with Collider. Mundy countered that Hal’s death would “infuse the entire story with a lot of emotionality,” giving extra weight to Hal and John’s shared history.

The flash-forward gives Hal’s 2016 storyline a sense of impending tragedy. During a press roundtable, Lindelof discussed writing Hal with an awareness of his eventual fate.

“HBO afforded us a lot of time and a lot of patience, and we got to spend a lot of time with John and a lot of time with Hal. We get to feel Hal’s mortality because of the way that the pilot ends. And so that idea of someone who’s looking back and saying, you know, ‘What was it all for?’ Those were just some of the ideas that really captivated us in the writers’ room, and it was our job to try to kind of get that into the scripts.”

Hal’s demise in 2026 does not remove Kyle Chandler from the series. Most episodes take place in 2016 to chart the growth of his partnership with John. Episode 1 also introduces a “Halogram,” a digital copy of Hal’s consciousness stored inside the power ring. Even if Hal is deceased in 2026, his digital construct could still exist wherever the missing ring is hidden, leaving the door open for appearances in future DC Universe projects.

Is John Stewart the Green Lantern in 2026?

Aaron Pierre will reprise the role of John Stewart in James Gunn’s 2027 film Man of Tomorrow, which pairs Superman and Lex Luthor against Brainiac. While John’s long-term hero status is clear, his status during the 2026 scene remains ambiguous.

When John first appears in 2026, he holds a portable drink cup in his bare right hand. During the 2016 timeline, John wore Hal’s ring on that specific hand. In the 2026 sequence, he wears no ring at all. If John is already operating as an active Green Lantern at that stage, he is using a different ring, which explains why he stops to inspect Hal’s hand for the missing original.
