Speculation is mounting that HBO’s acclaimed adaptation of The Last of Us might conclude sooner than anticipated. Despite previous assertions from showrunner Craig Mazin that the sprawling narrative would require at least four seasons to fully unfold, HBO CEO and Chairman Casey Bloys recently suggested that a trilogy of seasons might be the finish line.

In a recent interview with Deadline, Bloys was questioned about the rumors regarding the series’ lifespan. “It certainly seems that way,” Bloys remarked concerning the possibility of Season 3 serving as the finale. However, he was quick to clarify that the network follows the creative lead of the producers: “On decisions like that, we will defer to the showrunners. So you can ask them.”

This statement presents a curious contradiction to Mazin’s public roadmap. Following the production of the second season, Mazin explicitly stated that there was “no way to complete this narrative” within just three seasons, expressing hope that the show’s success would secure a fourth and final chapter. Whether Bloys’ comments reflect a change in internal strategy or simply a different perspective on the production timeline remains unclear.

Fans still have a significant wait ahead of them regardless of the final season count. The Last of Us Season 3 is currently slated for a 2027 release. If the production follows the cadence of the first two installments, a premiere in the early months of that year is a strong possibility, though HBO has yet to confirm a specific window.
