HBO Brings Harry Potter Back to Hogwarts Two Weeks Early

Warner Brothers left the lands of Fantastic Beasts to reassess the world of Harry Potter proper. Now 15 years after Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2 saw release, Warner Brothers and HBO are rebooting the entire franchise as an episodic show on the premium cable network. The first season has been filmed and is in the can, and viewers can catch it by the end of the year.

The traditional Hogwarts school year begins on September 1, but students returned earlier than anticipated for the second season. Production has already started on the second season despite no official confirmation.

Harry Potter Season 2 starts rolling cameras

Asha Soetan, who plays Quidditch player Angelina Johnson, shared a post on Instagram on August 14 indicating she was back on the set of Harry Potter. This confirmed that work on the second season had gotten underway more than two weeks ahead of the traditional term start date.

The quick turnaround between seasons matches the scale of HBO’s plans for the Wizarding World. Each season adapts one of J.K. Rowling’s seven original novels. The first season adapts Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone, while Season 2 will cover Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets.

Lengthy breaks between installments create problems for coming-of-age franchises because young stars grow up faster than their characters.

HBO has built out the sophomore season quickly. Kit Harington was cast as Gilderoy Lockhart to replace Nicholas Hoult, who left due to scheduling conflicts. HBO is preparing to open the Chamber of Secrets before the first season even debuts.

Harry Potter Season 1 is scheduled to premiere on Christmas Day 2026.
