Hayden Panettiere, Star of Heroes, Nashville, and Kingdom Hearts, Dies

Actor Hayden Panettiere, known for her roles in the television series Heroes and Nashville along with the video games Until Dawn and Kingdom Hearts, has died at the age of 36.

Her father, Skip Panettiere, confirmed the news in a family statement. He shared the family’s grief and asked for space to mourn.

“It is with profound sadness that we share the tragic passing of our beloved Hayden,” the statement reads. “She was an incredible light and a force of nature who brought immeasurable love and joy to all who knew her — and to the millions who watched her onscreen. We ask for privacy as our family takes time to process this unimaginable loss.”

Authorities have not officially confirmed the cause of Panettiere’s death.

Tributes from Friends and Colleagues

Fans, friends, and former co-stars responded to the announcement with heartfelt tributes. Her former Nashville co-star Connie Britton shared a message on Instagram remembering Panettiere’s talent and warmth.

“This was Hayden. Bursting with brilliance, shining so bright. I have no words for this sad song. Just heartbreak. I love you girl. Sleep easy now.”

Former Scream co-stars David Arquette, Melissa Barrera, and Selma Blair shared similar condolences. The official social media account for Kingdom Hearts on X also posted a tribute honoring her contributions to the franchise.

“We are deeply saddened by the passing of Hayden Panettiere. Through her performance as Kairi, Hayden brought warmth, heart, and an unforgettable voice to the Kingdom Hearts series. Our thoughts are with her family, friends, and loved ones.”

Actor Alyson Stoner, who voiced Kairi in Kingdom Hearts 3 and Kingdom Hearts: Melody of Memory, shared an emotional video on Instagram recalling her experiences working with Hayden and her late brother, Jansen Panettiere.

A Prolific Career in Film, Television, and Games

Panettiere began working in entertainment as an infant, booking her first commercials at 11 months old. By age 4, she joined the cast of the daytime soap opera One Life to Live. She gained widespread recognition playing the indestructible cheerleader Claire Bennett on NBC’s Heroes and later starred as country singer Juliette Barnes in Nashville. Her feature film work included roles in Remember the Titans, Scream 4, and Scream 6.

Panettiere also built a substantial voice acting portfolio. She voiced Dot in Pixar’s A Bug’s Life and worked on major gaming projects, including PlayStation titles The Mark of Kri and Until Dawn. Within the Kingdom Hearts series, Panettiere voiced the characters Kairi and Xion across multiple releases, including the original game, Kingdom Hearts 2, Kingdom Hearts: Birth by Sleep, and Kingdom Hearts 3D: Dream Drop Distance.

Earlier this year, Panettiere published her memoir, This Is Me: A Reckoning. The book documented her decades in the entertainment industry alongside personal accounts of her battles with postpartum depression, addiction, recovery, body dysmorphia, and domestic abuse.
