Half a Billion for Production: Disney’s Financial Report Casts Doubt on the Profitability of “Deadpool & Wolverine”
The final financial outcome for “Deadpool and Wolverine” was less remarkable than it initially appeared.
Disney confirmed that “Deadpool and Wolverine” ranks among the most expensive productions in the studio’s history. According to the report, total production and marketing costs exceeded half a billion dollars — amounting to $533 million.
Production took place at Pinewood Studios in the UK, a facility also used for “Star Wars” and “The Avengers.” Filming was repeatedly halted by the actors’ and writers’ strikes in 2023, which Forbes cites as a key factor behind the budget overrun. The document stresses that final expenditures “surpassed the original plans.”
Filming in the UK nevertheless proved advantageous: the local government offers rebates of up to 25.5% if at least 10% of qualifying spend occurs on British soil. Through that incentive program, Disney secured $104.7 million in tax rebates and subsidies, bringing its net outlay down to $429 million.
The film went on to gross $1.34 billion worldwide — the only Marvel release since the pandemic to cross the billion-dollar mark. Forbes estimates that, after a typical 50/50 split of box-office receipts between theaters and the studio, Disney’s share could be roughly $670 million.
The gap between that figure and the $429 million in net costs suggests a theoretical profit of $241 million. However, Forbes cautions that this number doesn’t tell the whole story. The calculation omits other significant items such as marketing outlays, digital sales, merchandise and various ancillary revenues, so the exact bottom line remains uncertain. According to That Park Place, the global marketing push may have topped $200 million, though Disney typically withholds such specifics.
Accordingly, Forbes offers a cautious conclusion: “Deadpool and Wolverine” delivered a strong box-office performance, but whether the project was profitable overall is still unclear.
That uncertainty also sheds light on recent comments from Shawn Levy: although he’s already mulling ideas for a follow-up, the prospect of a sequel worries him as much as it excites him — at this scale of spending, any misstep could trigger a financial disaster.
