Guillermo del Toro’s Frankenstein Trailer Is Delightfully Gothic

Guillermo del Toro‘s adaptation of Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein ranks among Polygon’s most anticipated films of 2025. Produced in partnership with Netflix, Del Toro’s version returns directly to the gothic heart of Shelley’s 19th‑century novel. With the creature — deliberately described as “the creature,” not “the monster” — first teased on September 30, 2025, the remaining question was simple: when would the trailer arrive?

We got the answer on October 1, 2025, a suitably atmospheric date. The trailer opens in Victor Frankenstein’s workshop, showing the painstaking assembly of the being, the creature’s awakening, and the escalating chaos as it searches for the creator who abandoned it. The footage balances awe and sorrow, hinting at a film that will likely be both visually striking and emotionally resonant — a standout for cinema this autumn.

Although Del Toro is no stranger to macabre material, he has emphasized — as reported by Variety — that this is not intended as a conventional horror film. In his words, “It’s an emotional story for me. It’s as personal as anything. I’m asking a question about being a father, being a son… I’m not doing a horror movie — ever.”

The cast is led by Oscar Isaac as Victor Frankenstein, with Jacob Elordi portraying the creature. Readers familiar with Shelley’s novel know the narrative contains far more than shock and gore: it explores obsession, violence, and an aching desire for acceptance. How Del Toro translates those complex themes to the screen remains to be seen, but the trailer suggests he’s aiming for depth as well as spectacle.

Viewers won’t wait long to judge for themselves: Frankenstein will play an awards‑qualifying limited theatrical run in select cinemas beginning October 17, 2025, before premiering on Netflix on November 7, 2025. For further details about the theatrical engagements, see Polygon’s coverage here.
