Filmmaker Lilly Wachowski has officially confirmed that she is not involved in the development of the upcoming fifth installment of The Matrix franchise.

She further noted that the film’s director, Drew Goddard (known for “The Cabin in the Woods”), is seeking a “blessing” from both her and Lana Wachowski before moving forward with the project.

Warner Bros. is eager to produce another film—they always are. Personally, I have no desire to play in that sandbox anymore; I’m finished with it. However, things might unfold with Drew Goddard. He is hesitant to proceed without our approval. It’s a delicate situation: we might get involved, see where things stand, and then decide whether to grant him our blessing. So, while something might happen, it remains uncertain for now,

— Lilly remarked during an appearance on KCRW’s The Business podcast.

The original “Matrix,” starring Keanu Reeves, debuted in 1999, followed by two sequels in 2003. The fourth film, “Resurrections,” was helmed solely by Lana Wachowski and released in 2021; it received polarized reviews from critics and ultimately struggled at the box office.

News of Goddard’s new take on the franchise surfaced in 2024. As of March 2026, he confirmed that the screenplay is still in progress, emphasizing that he is approaching the project with a deep sense of responsibility. Specific plot details and casting information for the fifth film have yet to be disclosed.
