Lilly Wachowski disavows involvement in the new “Matrix” film

Filmmaker Lilly Wachowski has officially confirmed that she is not involved in the development of the upcoming fifth installment of The Matrix franchise.

She further noted that the film’s director, Drew Goddard (known for “The Cabin in the Woods”), is seeking a “blessing” from both her and Lana Wachowski before moving forward with the project.

Warner Bros. is eager to produce another film—they always are. Personally, I have no desire to play in that sandbox anymore; I’m finished with it. However, things might unfold with Drew Goddard. News of Goddard’s new take on the franchise surfaced in 2024. As of March 2026, he confirmed that the screenplay is still in progress, emphasizing that he is approaching the project with a deep sense of responsibility.
