GTA VI Developers Issue New Modding Rules Banning Story Changes and Crossover Content
Mods featuring gacha mechanics and loot boxes for GTA are also prohibited.
Grand Theft Auto VI is scheduled for release on November 19, 2026, for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S consoles. Nothing has been shared about the PC version yet, but some enthusiasts have already started creating mods for the current GTA V inspired by content from the new installment.
Users have noticed that in September, developers updated their modification policy. Rockstar Games urges mod creators to respect the studio’s games by avoiding mods that alter the story, original missions, and other content:
Do not expand or modify official stories, plots, missions, characters, and other elements of the established Rockstar Games continuum.
Creators are also urged not to build modifications that add maps, characters, stories, game assets, or other forms of intellectual property from one Rockstar Games product into another.
In addition, there is a clause that formally bans fan ports to various platforms:
Do not modify our games for the purpose of running them on consoles, hardware devices, or other platforms on which these games have not been officially released by Rockstar Games.

Rockstar Games also requires that users not violate the intellectual property rights of the studio itself and third parties. For example, mods cannot use protected intellectual property belonging to others, including music, characters, photos, games, brands, and real-world locations.
Voice acting is mentioned in a separate section, prohibiting modders from using or modifying voice recordings from Rockstar Games titles:
Do not modify or use in other products audio snippets from any games released by Rockstar Games. Do not use the voices, images, and likenesses of real people without their written consent.
The developers reminded the community that modders have the right to monetize their modifications only through digital stores approved by Rockstar Games itself. Mods utilizing loot boxes and similar mechanics are also banned:
We do not permit the creation of modifications associated with gambling, “mystery boxes,” “gacha,” and other probability-based mechanics that allow gambling for real money. We do not permit offering and selling in-game virtual currency for real money. We do not permit the use and advertising of cryptocurrencies and crypto assets (for example, NFTs, tokens, memecoins, and stablecoins).
