GTA VI Developer Discusses Gameplay Approach and Shares New Screenshots
Rockstar Games is preparing to unveil official gameplay for Grand Theft Auto VI soon, following new development details revealed in an upcoming magazine feature.
An article from the Fall 2026 issue of Dazed, scheduled to hit newsstands on September 10, was recently published online. In the piece, Rockstar North co-studio head Rob Nelson discussed the development process behind Grand Theft Auto VI.
Nelson noted that more than a decade of anticipation has created “unprecedented pressure” for the sequel to deliver. However, he emphasized that in his view, “no external pressure can compare to the pressure we put on ourselves as a team.”
Nelson also explained that the studio critically analyzes its past titles to identify areas that fell short, adjusting elements iteratively during production based on feel:
We look back at our previous games with a critical eye and see where we want to evolve based on what we did not do as well as we would have liked — either because we did not have the time, resources, or technological capability, or in some cases because we simply did not think it through as well as we could have. A lot of what we do is very iterative — we adjust a lot based on our own feel, depending on what works and what does not.
Dazed also published several character screenshots from the title:
The Dazed report highlighted a dynamic body modification system in the game. Protagonists will be able to lose weight, build muscle, or gain weight based on player choices:
Food impacts Jason and Lucia’s weight, while workouts visibly build and define their muscles. And if you end up spending long periods away from your bed — on the run from police, or on a multi-day bender — it shows in their appearance. The effect is a bit like The Picture of Dorian Gray: except instead of your soul being mirrored in a creepy painting in an attic, your habits and sins are rendered on the faces and bodies of the game’s avatars
Causing unchecked mayhem in GTA VI will carry greater consequences, as the world actively responds to player actions. The overall tone of the game is positioned between Grand Theft Auto V and Red Dead Redemption 2:
With the visual feedback, the deep relationship mechanics, and the heightened realism of the world [the protagonists] inhabit, players in the state of Leonida might think twice before indulging in the arcade-style rampages of past GTA games.
Grand Theft Auto VI is scheduled to launch on November 19 of this year on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. No release window has been announced for the PC version.
