GTA Creator Says Advocates of Widespread AI Are Not Fully Developed Individuals
Dan Houser argues that artificial intelligence can never fully replace people because it lacks a soul.
Former Rockstar Games lead writer and studio co‑founder Dan Houser leveled sharp criticism at figures leading the generative AI sector during an interview on The Chris Evans Breakfast Show on Virgin Radio UK.
Discussing his new audiobook, A Better Paradise Volume One: An Aftermath — which follows a game project that collapsed when its AI became overly clever — Houser concurred with the host’s point that AI will never completely supplant human creativity because it is devoid of a soul.
Some of the people now attempting to define humanity’s future and the role of creativity through AI are neither the most humane nor the most imaginative. They act as if to proclaim, “We are better at being human than you,” which is plainly untrue. In the book we touch on the notion that humanity is being guided down a particular path by a cohort who may themselves be far from fully developed individuals.
When asked whether he believes the current wave of AI will be an extraordinary success, Houser answered in the negative.
AI will ultimately consume itself. Models are trained on internet data, yet the web is increasingly filled with content produced by the models themselves. It’s like feeding cows to cows — we ended up with mad cow disease. I don’t see how the quality of training data will improve if the source is already being exhausted. AI will perform brilliantly at certain tasks, but not across the board.
