In celebration of Ghostbusters Day, Netflix has pulled back the curtain on its highly anticipated animated project. Officially titled Ghostbusters: Night Shift, the series is slated to arrive on the platform sometime next year.

Developed by the team at Sony Pictures Animation—the creative force behind Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse and KPop Demon Hunters—this exclusive 2027 release promises to breathe fresh life into the franchise. According to a statement from Netflix, the show is poised to expand the series’ legacy, blending the signature supernatural humor fans love with high-stakes paranormal action.

While narrative specifics remain under wraps, the production roster is stacked with industry heavyweights. Executive producers include Ben Hibon, Elliott Kalan, Amie Karp, Dan Aykroyd, and the duo behind the recent films, Jason Reitman and Gil Kenan. Reitman and Kenan were instrumental in crafting the most recent live-action installments, Ghostbusters: Afterlife and Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire.

The studio also shared a piece of conceptual key art featuring a stylized take on the iconic Ghostbusters logo. This visual tease suggests that the characters may find themselves dealing with threats that extend far beyond the standard spectral activity.

The Ghostbusters universe is no stranger to the world of animation. The beloved The Real Ghostbusters series enjoyed a robust seven-season run, serving as a direct narrative extension of the original films. This was followed in 1997 by Extreme Ghostbusters, which adopted a grittier tone and introduced a fresh cast of characters. Night Shift represents the first animated entry in the franchise since that ’90s cult classic.

Development on this project has been underway for several years. It serves as a significant milestone for the franchise, following the polarized audience response to 2024’s Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire.
