Following their collaboration on 2021’s Ghostbusters: Afterlife and the 2024 sequel Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire, creators Gil Kenan and Jason Reitman are expanding the supernatural franchise’s lore. Their latest project, the Netflix animated series Ghostbusters: Night Shift, is set to transport audiences back to New York City in 1994, bridging the gap between the classic 80s films and the modern era.
“We became fascinated by the untapped potential of the 1990s within the ghostbusting mythology,” Kenan shared during a panel at the Annecy Festival. “While Afterlife provided a brief glimpse into the characters’ paths after they drifted apart, it felt like there was a significant, untold chapter in the Ghostbusters legend waiting to be explored.”

The series will peel back the curtain on the original firehouse headquarters, shifting the focus to a fresh cohort of young underdogs forced into the ghostbusting business. According to Kenan, the show stays true to the franchise’s roots: “Ghostbusters has always championed the outsider. It’s about scrappy individuals who refuse to play by the system’s rules to save their city. These new heroes are no different; they have to be incredibly resourceful while operating in a world that doesn’t quite grasp what they’re dealing with.”
While the series features self-contained, “villain-of-the-week” encounters, it is also deeply serialized, anchoring itself firmly within the established cinematic timeline. Kenan emphasizes a balance in storytelling, aiming for “meaty, epic narrative arcs” that remain satisfying and accessible on an episode-by-episode basis.

The decision to anchor the story in 1994 was a deliberate creative choice. Co-showrunner Elliott Kalan describes that period as a pivotal transition for New York—a time when the city was evolving from its grit-heavy past into a new, more polished urban identity. “We wanted to lean into that specific 90s punk culture,” Kalan noted. This DIY spirit extends to the series’ aesthetic; the iconic Ghostbusters logo has been reimagined with the raw, photocopied look of underground band flyers, complemented by a soundtrack rooted in the era’s alternative rock scene.
As co-showrunner Ben Hibon puts it, “1994 was such a vibrant, chaotic collision of culture, music, and creativity—plus all those unmistakable city smells.”
Ghostbusters: Night Shift is scheduled to premiere on Netflix in 2027.
