Developers Say Fable Will Feature Major Changes Instead of Minor Upgrades
Playground Games is avoiding minor upgrades like a 1 percent damage boost in Fable, promising meaningful ability changes instead, while certain chest items will let players raise their hero’s social status.
Creative Director Will Kennedy shared in an interview that the developers want to make progression truly noticeable.
We want our upgrades to be, as we call them, really meaningful. So you are not going to get something like, “Oh, 1% damage” and things like that. Instead, the changes will be much more substantial.
As an example, Kennedy cited weapon magic. Initially, it lets players launch enemies into the air, and after an upgrade, it adds the ability to slam them back down to the ground, which significantly expands the capability of the ability.
Loot will also tie into social mechanics. According to Game Director Craig Litler, players can find gifts for NPCs inside chests and use them to interact with the world’s residents.
For example, you might get a gift that interacts with the life system. I don’t know what exact gifts you can find in an old mine — maybe something like a “Bag of Blisters” — but once you collect it, you can use that item on NPCs all over the world.

The game will feature a sword and shield, a two-handed hammer, a bow, and a crossbow. Fable will release on February 23, 2027, for Xbox Series X|S, PS5, and PC.
