Project art director Jerry O’Flaerty draws comparisons to the films from the Alien franchise.
The Gears of War prequel, E-Day, aims to return the series to the chilling atmosphere of the 2006 original. Project art director Jerry O’Flaerty compared the two eras like this: if the first game was Ridley Scott’s Alien — a slow-burning, claustrophobic horror driven by a single unseen predator — the later titles evolved into James Cameron’s Aliens: loud, action-packed encounters swarmed by hordes of foes.
The original Gears felt like a monster horror played out in shadowed corridors. Later the franchise shifted into a straight-up “monster shooter” — which is great, and fans love parts 2, 3, and 4. But the first title carried real isolation, taut tension, and the dread of danger around every corner. That’s the mood we want to recapture.
