FX Reveals Details of ‘Shogun’ Season 2 — Story Jumps Ahead Ten Years

Filming for the FX historical drama’s follow-up is scheduled to begin in January 2026.

FX has revealed initial details about the second season of Shōgun, including plot outlines and the updated cast. The new chapter is set to take place ten years after the first season’s finale.

According to co-writer and executive producer Justin Marks, this next installment will be “a story of war and its aftermath” while also delivering “an unexpected love story.” He added that moving the timeline forward a decade will let the series portray the characters in a fresh light.

“We want to bring viewers back to these characters, but in a way that reveals how their lives have changed over the years and what they have endured.”

Hiroyuki Sanada (Lord Yoshi Toranaga) and Cosmo Jarvis (John Blackthorne) will reprise their roles. Joining the cast are Asami Mizukawa, Masataka Kubota, Sho Kaneta, Takaaki Enoki and Jun Kunimura.

Production on season two will begin in January 2026 in Vancouver. No premiere date has been announced yet, but the new episodes are expected to arrive in 2027.

Shōgun is adapted from James Clavell’s 1975 novel and follows two men from different worlds — English navigator John Blackthorne and Japanese daimyo Yoshi Toranaga — whose destinies become entwined amid the political machinations of feudal Japan.

Originally conceived as a limited series, the show was renewed by FX for two additional seasons after strong ratings and critical praise. In 2024, Shōgun became the first Japanese drama to win the Emmy for Outstanding Drama Series. The series went on to collect 18 Emmy Awards overall, along with numerous other honors and nominations, so expectations for season two are naturally high.
