Final Fantasy VII Rebirth: Travis Willingham of Critical Role Replaces Sephiroth’s Original English Voice Actor

Sephiroth in Final Fantasy VII Revelation

During the 2026 Summer Game Fest, Square Enix pulled back the curtain on Final Fantasy VII Revelation, the highly anticipated conclusion to the studio’s reimagined trilogy. The reveal trailer provided an expansive look at Cloud Strife’s upcoming final chapter, but observant fans quickly pointed out a distinct shift in the aura of the series’ primary antagonist. Sephiroth, previously voiced by Tyler Hoechlin, has been recast, with the iconic villain now being portrayed by Critical Role’s Travis Willingham.

Following the presentation, director Naoki Hamaguchi—who previously helmed 2024’s Final Fantasy VII Rebirth—explained during a stream hosted by Maximilian Dood that Hoechlin was unable to return for this installment due to scheduling conflicts. Through an interpreter, Hamaguchi confirmed that a new performer was necessary to bring the legendary soldier back to life, with Square Enix subsequently identifying Willingham as the successor.

While audiences best recognize Willingham as a cornerstone of the Critical Role empire and its CEO, he brings an immense portfolio of voice acting experience to the role. His resume includes prominent turns in Fullmetal Alchemist, One Piece, Naruto Shippuden, and the Sonic the Hedgehog franchise. Notably, he has served as the definitive voice for Marvel’s Thor for years and shares a long-standing creative partnership with fellow Final Fantasy VII cast member Matt Mercer. Based on the brief snippets of dialogue featured in the reveal trailer, Willingham appears to be a formidable choice to anchor the trilogy’s finale.

Final Fantasy VII Revelation is slated for a worldwide release in Spring 2027, launching simultaneously across PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, Nintendo Switch 2, and PC.
