Final Fantasy 14’s Free Ride on Switch 2 Is Coming to an End

All great journeys eventually reach a milestone. Following a generous one-month introductory grace period celebrating the launch of Final Fantasy 14 on the Nintendo Switch 2, Square Enix is officially introducing the mandatory subscription model for the platform.

Square Enix confirmed the conclusion of this complimentary period via an official update on the Lodestone blog. As previously outlined, while standard adventurers typically require only a single recurring pass to explore the MMORPG across other systems, experiencing the game natively on the Switch 2 demands an additional dedicated subscription. To help offset this extra expense, players will not be required to maintain an active Nintendo Switch Online membership to access the title. Furthermore, existing subscribers on alternative platforms will receive a generous 50% discount on their Switch 2 subscription fee.

The transition away from the complimentary phase takes effect sharply on Monday, September 7, at 11:59 p.m. local time.

How to Secure a Final Fantasy 14 Subscription on Switch 2

In a slight departure from standard transactions, purchasing time for the hybrid console involves an extra step. Rather than paying directly through conventional billing methods, users must acquire specialized FFXIV Coins via the Nintendo eShop. These digital coins are then redeemed on the Final Fantasy 14 Mog Station to settle recurring dues or purchase optional cosmetic goods from the official online marketplace. While automated billing renewals can be configured on the Switch 2, they will only process successfully if your account maintains a sufficient balance of FFXIV Coins.

New players who purchase and register either the Starter Edition or the Complete Edition will still receive a standard 30-day allotment of complimentary playtime. Once that initial period lapses, maintaining access requires a paid membership. However, a reliable workaround remains for absolute newcomers: if you have never registered any retail tier of the game, you can continue enjoying the expansive free trial without ever needing to pay a subscription fee.
