FFXIV arriving on Switch 2 this summer, but there’s a catch

Square Enix is set to bring Final Fantasy XIV to the Nintendo Switch 2 this August, though the integration comes with a notable caveat. During the April 2026 FFXIV Fan Fest keynote, CEO Takashi Kiryu revealed that extensive negotiations with Nintendo resulted in a mandate to alter the game’s traditional subscription model specifically for this hardware.

While FFXIV players are accustomed to cross-platform accessibility under a single subscription, the Switch 2 iteration will require a secondary, standalone subscription. To soften the blow, Square Enix has negotiated a few compromises: players will be exempt from needing a Nintendo Switch Online membership, and those maintaining an active subscription on other platforms will be eligible for a 50% discount on their Switch 2 access.

During the event, producer Naoki Yoshida provided a brief, albeit limited, demonstration of the game running on a Switch 2 unit. While the handheld performance was showcased only via a zoomed-in camera view of Yoshida navigating a hub city, the brief gameplay snippet appeared stable and smooth.

Square Enix plans to host an early access phase ahead of the official release to polish the experience and address any technical bugs; notably, this period will be entirely free for participants. The Switch 2 launch version is expected to include all expansions up through Dawntrail 7.5, with subsequent support for FFXIV 8.0 (Evercold). While Square Enix is simultaneously expanding the free trial on other platforms to include Shadowbringers and its subsequent patches, Yoshida remained silent on whether this trial will be supported on the Nintendo console.
