Fans Flood Cyberpunk: Edgerunners Showrunner With Requests to Bring Back David
Season 2 will introduce viewers to a new group of Night City residents.
Bartosz Sztybor, showrunner of the anime Cyberpunk: Edgerunners, told GamesRadar+ about the pressure he faced from fans of David Martinez. He said he received dozens of private messages a day asking him to bring back the first season’s main character. From the start, though, he was sure the follow-up had to tell a different story:
“When you get dozens of messages every day asking you to bring David back, it can be a lot of pressure. But from the start I understood: no, season 2 has to be different to stay true to the universe. Even if the whole audience wants David back, I felt that deep down viewers don’t actually want that. If they got it, they would probably be disappointed.”
Instead of bringing back familiar characters, the team chose to focus on new ones. Season 2 centers on the mercenary Weak Kingsley, who lives in the shadow of his own fame, the film buff Roman Carax, the nomad D, and Talia, a woman from a corpo family who joins the Maelstrom gang.

Sztybor admits that the decision to leave the story of the fan-favorite characters behind still haunts him. He says he is proud of the result, though, and thankful to studio TRIGGER, which backed the creators in their push to make season 2 completely different:
“I still have nightmares even now. Season 2 is different. So different that people who loved Edgerunners will be surprised. That’s why I felt the pressure. I still have nightmares, but I’m very proud of the decision to do something completely different. I didn’t back down from it. Trigger helped us with that… Our rebellious approach and Trigger’s rebellious approach really came in handy here.”
Cyberpunk: Edgerunners 2 premieres on Netflix on October 20.
