As development on the Isle of Ireland expansion for Euro Truck Simulator 2 gains momentum, we wanted to pull back the curtain and offer a glimpse into the vital work performed by our research team. Today, we’re sitting down with Adam, a core member of the SCS Software research crew, to discuss the intricate process of bringing the Emerald Isle to life.

Since joining SCS in 2022, Adam has been instrumental in shaping several of our most anticipated map expansions.
“My journey began with research for the West Balkans, Greece, and Nordic Horizons, as well as the reworks of Switzerland and the Benelux region. Currently, I am overseeing the research efforts for the UK and the Isle of Ireland. This project is particularly meaningful to me, as it marks my first time collaborating professionally with my brother, who is serving as the map lead for this specific DLC.”
Adam’s role is to ensure that a steady stream of high-fidelity reference material flows to our design teams. “It’s a collaborative effort,” he explains. “Our research isn’t just for map designers; it serves as the foundation for our vehicle, vegetation, and road engineering teams. I’m fortunate to work alongside a group of incredibly talented and passionate experts in their respective fields.”

The research phase starts well before the first virtual road is laid. It’s about building a framework that dictates the entire aesthetic and logistical structure of the map.
“Initially, we immerse ourselves in the history, legislation, and culture of the region,” Adam notes. “In coordination with the map lead, we plan the road networks and urban hubs. A crucial aspect is balancing the in-game economy, so we work closely with our economy specialists to design realistic logistics depots that fit seamlessly into the map’s layout.”

Once the blueprint is set, the team shifts to field research—capturing the minute details that lend authenticity to the virtual environment.
“We essentially ‘scan’ the landscape, gathering photographic data to ensure we capture the regional variations. For instance, road markings differ significantly between the Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland, and it was vital we reflect that accurately. We synthesize this data into a master list of assets, ensuring our 3D artists and vegetation teams have precisely what they need to build an authentic world.”

Deep-dive technical research is often required for even the most mundane elements, such as road signage. “We study official signage manuals to replicate sizing, arrow geometry, and typography. Every sign is calculated using a ‘Stroke Width’ unit, determined by the size of a lowercase ‘x’, which is itself influenced by local speed limits. It’s a precise science that allows us to maintain both technical performance and visual reality.”

As the region continues to evolve, the team faces the unique challenge of keeping pace with modern infrastructure developments. “Ports like Rosslare and cities like Waterford are undergoing massive modernizations. Capturing the character of these changing landscapes, while distinguishing the architectural nuances between the Republic and Northern Ireland, remains our biggest—and most rewarding—hurdle.”

Players can look forward to exploring iconic landmarks, including the River Liffey in Dublin, the historic cranes of Belfast Harbor, the vast central peat bogs, and the rugged beauty of Connemara. Adam’s hope is simple: that players feel the passion and “magical atmosphere” the team has poured into the project.
