Enthusiast Ports GTA 3, Vice City, and Liberty City Stories to Nintendo 3DS
Unofficial ports use the console’s capabilities.
An enthusiast operating under the handle Epic0522 recently released “REGTA,” a collection of unofficial ports of classic Grand Theft Auto franchise games for the New Nintendo 3DS family of consoles.
The Grand Theft Auto III port is based on the RE3 project, GTA: Vice City is built on reVC, and GTA: Liberty City Stories is based on “reStories/reLCS.”
Epic0522 adapted the games for the console, enabling the map and interface to use the system’s second screen for display. The ports feature touchscreen controls and an on-screen keyboard that allows players to enter cheats.
Epic0522 published the source code for the “REGTA-3DSPort-Complete” project publicly on GitHub. Supported platforms include the New Nintendo 3DS and XL, as well as the New Nintendo 2DS XL. The developer also stated that he fixed various technical problems with texture rendering and eliminated graphical glitches.
Notably, experiments of this nature are formally prohibited. Rockstar Games noted in its rules for modders:
Don’t modify our games in order to run them on consoles, hardware devices or other platforms where those games were not officially released by Rockstar Games.
