Emilia Clarke Reveals Secret Health Battle During Game of Thrones Filming
To suggest that Game of Thrones served as a massive career catalyst since its April 2011 debut would be a profound understatement. George R.R. Martin’s expansive fantasy world quickly became a global cultural phenomenon, an influence that persists today through successors like House of the Dragon and the burgeoning A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms.
Yet, behind the spectacle, the journey was grueling for a cast that dedicated an entire decade to the legendary series. In a candid conversation on the How to Fail With Elizabeth Day podcast, Emilia Clarke—the visionary actress behind the formidable Daenerys Targaryen—revealed the private, harrowing reality of navigating two life-threatening brain aneurysms during the show’s early seasons.
Clarke’s first health crisis emerged shortly after production wrapped on the inaugural season. After undergoing surgery and beginning her recovery, doctors identified a second, smaller aneurysm. By 2013, while living in New York, a follow-up scan revealed the growth had doubled in size, necessitating urgent intervention. Despite complications during the procedure, Clarke survived, though the experience left her grappling with the surreal sensation of having narrowly escaped death.

“I felt a strange obligation to project that I was fine, as if my survival meant the crisis hadn’t occurred,” Clarke admitted. “I became emotionally closed off. It reached a point where I found it nearly impossible to make eye contact with anyone.”
Her rehabilitation was an arduous, uphill battle; she had to relearn basic motor functions, including speaking and walking. Despite her eagerness to return to the set, the lingering fear of recurrence—fueled by persistent headaches—made everyday life and public appearances, such as a notably tense MTV interview, incredibly daunting.
Reflecting on that period, Clarke acknowledges that while she returned to the spotlight prematurely, the structure of her work proved to be a lifeline. “I am not sure how I would have navigated that time without my work,” she noted, pointing to her appearance at San Diego Comic-Con just six weeks post-surgery as a crucial part of her coping mechanism.
HBOThough the legacy of Game of Thrones remains a subject of heated debate—particularly concerning the divisive conclusion of its eighth season—Clarke’s perspective on the series has evolved with time. She describes her feelings toward the show as something that shifts annually.
“For a long time, the scale of the experience was too vast to process,” she explained. “It shaped my entire youth. Those decade-long bonds became a second family. There were undeniably grueling stretches and moments of pure magic, but above all, there was life.”
“Looking back now, I recognize the sheer magnitude of what we lived through. It was truly lightning in a bottle—an extraordinary chapter of my life, and I am honored to have been a part of it.”
