Hannibal devotees are in for a surprise reunion this year — though not the revival many imagined. Bryan Fuller, the creator behind Hannibal and Pushing Daisies, directs his first feature film, Dust Bunny, teaming with Mads Mikkelsen. The movie’s inaugural trailer premiered alongside this announcement.
Mikkelsen — familiar to audiences for his chilling turn in Hannibal and for roles in films like Doctor Strange — steps away from the iconic cannibal persona. In Fuller’s earlier series, the character was expanded into a complex centerpiece across three seasons; here, Mikkelsen plays a very different sort of outsider. Rather than a predator of people, his new character is a reluctant assassin who begins to use his lethal abilities to confront literal monsters.
In the trailer, 10-year-old Aurora (Sophie Sloan) recounts how her family dismissed her claims about monsters beneath her bed — until one night she believes those monsters took them. Mikkelsen’s unnamed hitman initially assumes Aurora’s parents were swallowed up by the violent world he inhabits, a world in which professional killers are spiraling out of control. Haunted by guilt, he reluctantly vows to help the child confront whatever is really stalking her.
Sigourney Weaver also appears, lending gravitas as a character who seems to understand the true scope of the danger and cautions the hitman not to underestimate Aurora’s conviction. The trailer keeps pulling the rug out from under expectations, suggesting the film hides as much beneath its surface as the monsters it features.
The trailer is a vivid burst of color and kinetic set pieces: the hitman fends off waves of assassins bent on targeting Aurora, there are surreal moments (including Weaver dispatching foes with stiletto heels), and glimpses of shadowy creatures and martial-arts choreography. Between the action and the folklore-tinged mystery surrounding Aurora’s missing parents, Dust Bunny promises an offbeat fusion of scares and spectacle. The film is scheduled to open in theaters on December 5, 2025.
