Dungeon Crawler Carl TV Show Bypasses Pilot, Moves Straight to Production

Following reports from last spring, Matt Dinniman’s hit LitRPG series, Dungeon Crawler Carl, is officially moving from the page to the small screen. Peacock has confirmed a straight-to-series order for the television adaptation, which will be spearheaded by executive producer Seth MacFarlane (Family Guy) and penned by writer Chris Yost (Thor: Ragnarok). By bypassing the traditional pilot process, the network is signaling a massive vote of confidence in the project’s immediate potential.

A straight-to-series commitment is a rare industry designation reserved for high-stakes projects, placing Dungeon Crawler Carl alongside heavy-hitting titles like HBO’s House of the Dragon and Prime Video’s The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power. This move underscores the rapid ascent of Dinniman’s work, which began as a grassroots self-publishing effort and has since blossomed into a robust multimedia franchise spanning eight novels, graphic adaptations, tabletop gaming, and official merchandise.

At its core, the series subverts classic video game and TTRPG tropes, chronicling the chaotic exploits of Carl—a cynical Coast Guard veteran—and his ex-girlfriend’s Maine Coon, Princess Donut. Together, they are thrust into a lethal, reality-show-style gauntlet designed for the twisted amusement of an interstellar audience.

The production will be handled by MacFarlane’s studio, Fuzzy Door, with Yost, MacFarlane, Erica Huggins, and Rachel Hargreaves-Heald serving as executive producers. Dinniman recently hinted at further announcements on social media, encouraging enthusiasts to look forward to San Diego Comic-Con, where he and MacFarlane are slated to participate in a special panel.
