Dune 3 IMAX Screenings Sell Out as Scalpers Inflate Ticket Prices

Dune: Part Three opens in standard movie theaters on Dec. 18, but IMAX locations will host early insider screenings starting on Dec. 14. Advance tickets went on sale on Aug. 18. Despite the release date sitting four months away, IMAX showtimes sold out almost instantly as scalpers used automated bots to sweep up inventory in bulk, leaving many fans unable to secure seats at face value.

According to AMC chief executive Adam Aron, customer demand for the IMAX screenings vastly exceeded internal forecasts. Network and app traffic “reached levels approximately three times higher” than the launch day for Spider-Man: Brand New Day. On social media, Aron addressed the disruption:

We try so hard to be expert in what we usually do so well, devoted as we are to pleasing hundreds of millions of guests in our theatres each year. Today, though, as Dune 3 tickets went on sale, the crushing volumes briefly slowed or glitched our online ticketing systems.

Scalping was not limited to online transactions. In New York City, a buyer was spotted purchasing 80 physical tickets at a theater box office, prompting a photo shared by u/bootwootboot in the NYCmovies subreddit. The operation yields substantial profits on secondary markets, where eBay listings for Dune 3 NYC screenings have surpassed $150.

Moviegoers have begun reporting marked-up ticket listings directly to AMC. Reselling passes above face value breaches AMC terms of service, allowing theater managers to void reservations whenever an online listing exposes the exact theater, auditorium, showtime, and seat numbers. While cancellations do not completely eliminate ticket re-sellers, enforcement can deter bulk buying.

Ticket reselling continues to spread across live events, collectibles, and cinematic releases. Resellers have previously targeted promotional items like McDonald’s Pokémon Happy Meal cards, and specialty retailers in Japan have even introduced facial recognition systems to limit trading card hoarding.

The intense interest also comes as Avengers: Doomsday lost opening-weekend IMAX exclusivity to Dune, cementing Denis Villeneuve’s sci-fi conclusion as one of the most competitive theatrical releases of the year.
