Dragon Quest 1 & 2 Remake Receives Perfect and Near-Perfect Scores from the Media

Comment Views: 15

Square Enix has proven adept at revitalizing classic adventures. In 2025 the publisher celebrates another triumph — Dragon Quest I & II HD-2D Remake has garnered excellent reviews.

The game sits at an average score of 85% based on 54 reviews, with some outlets awarding a perfect 10/10 and calling the remake one of the series’ finest comebacks. Dragon Quest I & II HD-2D Remake fuses the spirit of the originals with modern visuals and subtle mechanical adjustments, creating an experience that feels both fresh and engaging.

Critics particularly highlight the gorgeous HD-2D aesthetic, which evokes a fairy-tale atmosphere and breathes new life into the classic JRPG; the soundtrack, the sense of adventure, and the straightforward storytelling that still resonates decades later; and the simple, satisfying combat with a lightly rebalanced difficulty that keeps the game accessible while still offering a challenge.

There are criticisms as well: at times the remake follows the original too faithfully, which can make the plot feel dated; modern conveniences like autosave or a more comprehensive quest log are missing; and the second installment does not always tap the full potential of HD-2D, occasionally trailing the opening chapter.

Despite these caveats, Dragon Quest I & II HD-2D Remake is a standout success for Square Enix. HD-2D remakes remain the gold standard for bringing classic Japanese RPGs back to life, marrying respect for the past with charm for contemporary players.
