Disc version of The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Remastered to be released in stripped-down form — insider

The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Remastered will be available in a physical edition, but players will still need to download a substantial portion of the game from online servers.

Microsoft and Bethesda surprised fans by releasing a remaster of the 2006 classic. Despite a handful of technical issues, the title was greeted warmly — offering a chance to revisit one of the genre’s landmark RPG experiences.

Originally Oblivion Remastered launched as a digital-only product, and Bethesda has now prepared a boxed edition for collectors and longtime fans. However, the disc does not contain the full game — it holds just 19 GB out of approximately 120 GB, which means players must download more than 100 GB.

The community reacted angrily: Bethesda had previously promised a complete retail release without additional downloads. Many fans say they feel misled.

For many, the boxed launch was meant to be a celebratory moment, but it has raised serious concerns: if the servers are eventually taken offline, disc owners could lose access to the entire game, turning this “return to the past” into a stark example of modern industry pitfalls.
