There is no sugarcoating the fact that M3GAN 2.0, the highly anticipated follow-up to Blumhouse’s viral sci-fi horror hit, struggled to find its footing at the box office. While the original film became a cultural phenomenon, raking in a staggering $180 million worldwide, the sequel stalled out just shy of $40 million. This sharp decline in ticket sales suggests that the campy charm of the first installment may have been a lightning-in-a-bottle moment rather than a sustainable foundation for a massive franchise.

The financial fallout has claimed its first casualty: Soulm8te. For those hoping to see the expansion of a “M3GAN Cinematic Universe,” the news is grim. Universal Pictures has officially scrubbed the spin-off from its upcoming release calendar.

Directed by Kate Dolan, Soulm8te was pitched as a provocative psychological thriller. The narrative centers on a grieving widower who commissions a sentient AI companion to fill the void left by his late wife. However, in keeping with the dark traditions of the genre, the android’s devotion takes a turn for the obsessive, leading to a series of lethal complications for everyone involved.

Thematically, Soulm8te was intended to share the same universe as M3GAN. This connection does raise some amusing questions regarding the logic of this world: after a high-tech toy went on a murderous rampage, one has to wonder why any consumer would willingly invite a “lovebot” into their home. Nevertheless, the premise offered a more mature exploration of artificial intimacy.

Prior to being pulled, the film had almost no marketing presence beyond an initial teaser and was slated for a January 8, 2026, theatrical debut. Per reports from Deadline, Blumhouse and Universal may shop the project to other distributors. While the film isn’t necessarily “dead,” its path to the big screen has become significantly more complicated.

Reflecting on the sequel’s disappointing performance, Blumhouse founder Jason Blum shared some candid insights on The Town podcast regarding where the production went wrong.

“We treated M3GAN as if she were Superman,” Blum admitted. “We believed her iconography was invincible—that we could shift genres, move her to a summer slot, or even attempt to pivot her from a villain to a protagonist. We fundamentally overestimated the audience’s attachment to the character versus the specific horror tone of the first film.”

Blum’s assessment rings true. While the sequel attempted to reinvent M3GAN as a witty, action-heavy anti-hero, it lacked the grounded sci-fi dread that initially enthralled horror enthusiasts. By the time 2025 rolled around, the film delivered to audiences felt disconnected from what made the original a hit.

Despite the current setback, Soulm8te remains an intriguing concept. Positioned as a psychological thriller rather than a campy action-horror hybrid, it could have been the tonal course correction the franchise needed. Whether it will ever get the chance to prove that remains to be seen.
