Destiny 2 developers settle copyright dispute — author accused Bungie of plagiarism

A creator noticed unsettlingly familiar elements in the game.

Recently, Bungie reached a settlement with a writer. Earlier, Matthew Martino had accused the developers of Destiny 2 of plagiarism.

The lawsuit was filed last year. Martino claimed that the Red Legion faction in Destiny 2, the Red War storyline, and certain plot details were derived from his work. The complaint stated, for example:

The resemblance between Martino’s antagonist—Yinnera—and Destiny 2’s main villain, Dominus Ghaul, is striking and strongly indicates more than mere coincidence.

In November 2025 it was announced that the case had been concluded: negotiations succeeded and all claims were settled. The terms of the agreement have not been disclosed.
