20th Century Studios has announced a Collector’s Edition 4K Blu-ray of James Cameron’s Avatar: Fire and Ash, arriving Dec. 8. The release includes more than six hours of previously unreleased bonus features.

The edition builds on the film’s original 4K Blu-ray release from March, which included roughly three hours of additional content.

What’s new in the Collector’s Edition?

The new features include Fire and Water: Making the Avatar Films, a two-part documentary about the franchise’s production, along with deleted and extended scenes. The release also includes performance-capture demonstrations, scene breakdowns, and behind-the-scenes material about the film’s digital environments and characters.

The performance-capture features offer a look at the technical side of Cameron’s filmmaking. The Avatar franchise has pushed the boundaries of visual effects and motion-capture technology, an approach that continues in Fire and Ash.

The Collector’s Edition also includes archival materials, production artwork, the screenplay, and a selection of awards-season panels featuring cast members and filmmakers.

Fire and Ash follows Jake Sully (Sam Worthington), Neytiri (Zoe Saldaña), and their family as they face another threat on Pandora: the aggressive Ash People and their leader, Varang (Oona Chaplin). Stephen Lang returns as Colonel Miles Quaritch, whose increasingly complicated relationship with the Na’vi is another major part of the story.

In its review, Polygon praised Cameron’s commitment to the franchise’s technical craft, particularly the performances and visual effects that give its digitally rendered characters a sense of physicality.
