DC Announces 2027 Wonder Woman Comic Writers and Film Update
Next year will be big for one member of DC’s Trinity, and it isn’t Superman. DC is calling 2027 the “Year of Wonder,” a year of stories from celebrated comic book creators. Tom King and Daniel Sampere’s somewhat controversial Wonder Woman run ends in December, and now we know what comes next for the character in the short term.
Writer Louise Simonson (X-Factor, Conan the Barbarian, Power Pack, The Death of Superman) will pick up where King left off with Wonder Woman #41. Cian Tormey will draw the four-issue story.
After that arc, Eisner Award-nominated writer Stephanie Williams (Wonder Woman, Moon Girl and Devil Dinosaur) takes over the series with artist Elena Casagrande. Their six issues run through October 2027. Neither writer appears to be taking the series on indefinitely, and DC hasn’t announced a new long-term team. The publisher does promise that “more Wonder Woman stories and superstar creators will be revealed” throughout 2027.
What do we know about the upcoming Wonder Woman comic arcs?
Simonson’s run begins as Diana tries to overturn the Amazon Safety Act, which has kept Amazonians from leaving their island. “I haven’t written many books with female leads, and they don’t come any more iconic than Diana,” Simonson said in a press release. “Teaming her up with Lois Lane, another iconic character, is a dream come true. Throw in Granny Goodness and her Female Furies? It doesn’t get more fun than that.”

DC has shown a first look at the covers for Wonder Woman #41. Ryan Sook drew the main cover, and the variants come from Daniel Sampere, David Nakayama, Cian Tormey, and Walter Simonson. The 32-page issue arrives on Jan. 20, 2027, at $4.99.

Williams’ run will include a team-up between Wonder Woman and Nubia. “Diana has my whole heart,” Williams said. “Getting to come back to her world after Wonder Woman and Matriarch feels like coming home, only this time with a longer runway. Six issues gives me room to really sit with Diana, to let her be fierce and funny and compassionate all at once, and to let the story breathe in a way I’m so excited for readers to experience. Plus, I finally get to work in the Nubia team-up I’ve been wanting to tell for a long time, but this time they won’t be going to Las Vegas.”

Why was Tom King’s Wonder Woman run so controversial?
King is best known for Mister Miracle, Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow, and, most recently, co-creating the HBO series Lanterns. He began his Wonder Woman run in 2023. He first hoped to write 100 issues, but he decided to step down as his work at DC Studios grew. Among other projects, he will showrun an upcoming DCU animated series for Mister Miracle.
King is a somewhat divisive figure in DC fandom. Readers often respond to his writing with a “love it or hate it” reaction, even though comics like Mister Miracle earned critical acclaim. On Wonder Woman, some fans dislike his characterization of Diana, find the dialogue too wordy, and argue that he ignores existing continuity too often. Away from the page, King draws controversy because he is a former CIA officer.
The “Year of Wonder” may also bring long-awaited news on the in-development Wonder Woman film at DC Studios. Last year, DC Studios co-head James Gunn said Ana Nogueira was writing the film. Other details remain unconfirmed, including who will replace Gal Gadot as Diana.
