Dawn of War 4 Developers Explain Campaign Timeline and the Writer Helping Them with Warhammer 40,000 Lore

Several factions will clash on a single planet.

The creators of the strategy game Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War 4 released a new development diary detailing their work on the title. They spoke about a partner who helps them navigate the lore.

King Art enlisted John French as a consultant — the author of books such as “Praetorian of Dorn”, “The Silent War”, “Sons of the Emperor”, and “Tallarn ‘The Executioner'”.

The story they’ve crafted takes place roughly 200 years after Dawn of War: Dark Crusade (an expansion for the original DoW):

A rupture in reality known as the “Great Rift” has torn the galaxy apart and left the planet Kronus — along with certain members of the Blood Ravens Space Marine Chapter — isolated from the wider Imperium. Commanders Cyrus and Iona set course for Kronus to begin restoring their Chapter, but they soon uncover a sinister threat that imperils the entire galactic sector.

But the Space Marines aren’t the only ones eyeing the planet:

Deep beneath Kronus’s sands, an Adeptus Mechanicus expedition unearths a Necron complex. At first they mistake it for a tomb, then for a prison — but a prison for what? As the campaign progresses, it becomes clear how this buried secret affects the Orks and the Adeptus Mechanicus, ultimately drawing the Necrons to Kronus while the Space Marines fight desperately to survive.

Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War 4 will feature several factions, including the Orks and Space Marines:

We knew we absolutely had to include Space Marines — this is Dawn of War after all — and the Blood Ravens had to be present! We also began to conceive of DoW 4 as a reimagining of the original, so everyone agreed the Orks should be part of the factions.

The DoW 4 team also decided to add two additional factions

Players haven’t been able to play as the Necrons since Dark Crusade. Setting the game on Kronus gave us the perfect reason to bring them back. For the final slot, we wanted a faction that had never appeared in the Dawn of War series and would feel new to everyone — the Adeptus Mechanicus were an ideal fit for that role!

The developers of Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War 4 emphasized that they view the campaign and multiplayer as two completely separate experiences: they might create an extremely powerful unit for the campaign and then tone it down in multiplayer for balance.
